Why we chose this
Ballarat is better known for gold rush history than contemporary design, which is exactly what makes The Carriageworks so unexpected. The old railway workshops have been turned into something genuinely ambitious — a hotel that uses the scale and texture of the industrial original as a canvas for something new.
What to expect
Vaulted ceilings, polished concrete, and furniture that has been chosen rather than sourced from a catalogue. The restaurant takes the same approach to regional Victorian produce. The town itself rewards a day or two of exploration.
Best for
Design-conscious travellers looking for something surprising outside the usual capital-city circuit.
